This is the story of "Lacassagne’s" Fresh Meats and Provision

On November 12th 1935 Louis H. Lacassagne, Jr. married Rosa C. Radosti. With a two-hundred-dollar loan from his father-in-law, Louis got an old model T-truck and a few customers from his daddy’s existing delivery.           business. Louis rented a cooler from the New Orleans Cold Storage on Gaiennie Street in New Orleans. His customers were neighborhood groceries, small restaurants, and anyone who needed food products. After World War II, he bid on servicing shipping companies and was finally awarded a contract in 1948. He continued with the ships, grocery stores, and restaurants and also added dredging companies to his clientele.

In 1960, Herb Lacassagne joined the business, & in the mid-1960s, the shipping industry grew, as did Lacassagne’s. In 1963, the name was changed to “Lacassagne’s Ship Supplies” because that was the biggest part of the operation.
In 1967, a food broker from New Orleans presented a unique opportunity to Herb and asked him to bid pre-cooked hamburger patties to the Orleans Parish School Board. They won the bid, which led to another field of endeavor. In 1967, after 32 years on Gaiennie Street, Lacassagne’s moved to Tchoupitoulas Street. Finally incorporating in 1969 and buying their own building in Metairie.

In the 1980s, Herb, Jr. & Louis III joined the family business & a dry store warehouse was established on Broad Street across from The Times Picayune building. State institutions, prisons, & hospitals were now part of the every day operations. Due to the Port of New Orleans not expanding and the state deciding to build a Superdome, the shipping industry went by the wayside & Lacassagne’s Ship Supplies became Lacassagne’s Inc.

Business continued to grow every year until August of 2005 when along came a mean lady called Katrina. This storm destroyed the Airline warehouse & office, Broad Street warehouse, thirteen refrigerated trucks, & three tractor trailers.

A decision had to be made. Did the 3rd generation, during our best year ever, want to fold up and cash in the chips or move forward? The decision was made to move forward. In seven days a location was secured in Baton Rouge and merchandise was being shipped. Everything had to start over from scratch. With no trucks available and all the employees scattered, they unbelievably managed to start delivering product to the schools just eleven days after “The Storm”. A miracle had taken place. It wasn’t our best year in business, but it was very close. In 2009, Herb III, joined the family business, Lacassagne’s Inc. is now Lacassagne’s LLC. It has continually grown year after year due to hard work, dedication, and devotion. As the food service industy evolves, so does Lacassagne’s. This year marks another milestone in Lacassagne’s history as they now are creating a sales team to sell the daycare, nursery, and extended living market arenas.

Lacassagne’s LLC story ain’t finished yet!
